CARY ARTS CENTER Several Artworks THRESHOLD 2011 DRAWING ROOM 2011 Cary Arts Center (renovated from the Cary Old Elementary School building), Cary, NC The integrated and collaborative work by Jim Hirschfield, Sonya Ishii, & Norie Sato refers to the building’s original use as a school and its contemporary use as an art center. It includes flytower sculptures; a lobby with lit glass walls, glass doors and murals; a theater curtain; a plaza and artistic benches. The front plaza’s paving incorporates solar-powered lights creating a magical nighttime environment. Seven stainless steel and wood benches that recall traditional art school drawing horses are grouped to enable an impromptu outdoor drawing class. Over time they will host community-selected drawings that will be etched onto stainless steel boards.
