ROMARE BEARDEN PARK MASTER PLAN 2006-8 Charlotte, NC
In a collaboration with Dan Dodd of LandDesign of Charlotte, I helped conceptualize and design the park and to develop a master plan for the incorporation of art into the park. The park was named for the artist Romare Bearden who spent his early life in the Charlotte area and whose work sometimes depicted that era. Evocative of the artist’s life and work, the park was designed not to be a memorial to him but rather to allude to events in his life, aspects of his artwork, the way he made his images through the use of collage and line and subject matter of his artwork. Connections between Bearden’s life and work, cultural references to his life and those of his community, were a springboard to drive the design of the park, a park located in the heart of downtown Charlotte.
