WALLACE ALL FAITHS CHAPEL 2004/2005 Chapman University, Orange, CA Two projects were completed for this all faiths chapel: 1) the main front doors were clad in waterjet cut bronze in the form of a circular image generated from a sumi ink “gesture”, digitized, enlarged and waterjet cut. The image now recalls not just the original hand-made gesture, but maps, celestial movements, and the universal circular gesture of inclusiveness and coming together. 2) the light entering the chapel through the vertical windows was muted through layers composed of glass with a patterned interlayer of iridescent “color”. The patterns are abstract building blocks of symbols, which might be developed in the mind of the viewer as juxtapositions of various patterns occur as one’s relationship to the windows and layers changes.
